Rest, Reflect, & Reset
An End‑of‑Year Message to the Sydney HR Community
As 2025 draws to a close, I want to acknowledge the resilience and commitment shown by HR professionals across Sydney this year. It has been a demanding period in corporate Australia which has added more pressure on People Functions. Balancing complex responsibilities and navigating emotionally charged situations is the norm in HR but that doesn’t mean it does not take its toll.
HR is a profession that can be deeply rewarding, but it also brings unique pressures: heavy workloads, constant change, and the expectation to be available whenever challenges arise. These realities make it all the more important to pause at the end of the year.
That is why I encourage you to embrace the three R’s: Rest, Reflect, & Reset
Rest
Most importantly, allow yourself to rest. HR often demands an “always on” mindset, but the festive season is a chance to step away. Whether through hobbies, quiet time, or simply switching off, give yourself permission to recharge. Rest is not indulgence—it is essential for sustaining the energy and compassion that HR requires. Prioritise quality sleep to rejuvenate your mind and body.
Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, walking, or creative hobbies.
Limit screen time and work-related communications during your rest period.
Practice mindfulness or meditation to reduce stress and enhance mental clarity.
Remember that rest supports your long-term effectiveness and emotional well-being.
Reflect
Take time to look back on the year—not through the lens of perfection, but through progress. Consider the challenges you’ve navigated, the growth you’ve achieved, and the impact you’ve had on your colleagues and organisations. Reflection is about recognising the effort you’ve invested, the resilience you’ve shown, and the lessons you’ve learned. Congratulate yourself for the energy and empathy you’ve given, even when outcomes weren’t easy.
Acknowledge your personal and professional growth throughout the year.
Identify key challenges and how you overcame them.
Recognise moments where you made a positive impact on others.
Learn from setbacks without self-judgment.
Celebrate the skills and strengths you’ve developed.
Consider feedback received and how it has shaped your approach
Reset
As the calendar turns, use the opportunity to reset. Consider these ways to refresh and realign yourself:
Reconnect with family, friends, and loved ones to strengthen your support network.
Engage in activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit outside of work.
Reflect on your personal values and how they align with your professional goals.
Set clear, achievable intentions for the year ahead to guide your focus.
Embrace the chance to declutter your physical and mental space for a fresh start.
Practice gratitude for the experiences and lessons of the past year.
Perspective is powerful. It reminds us why we dedicate so much of ourselves to our careers, and it helps us return with renewed clarity and purpose. When January arrives, you’ll be better prepared to set new goals and embrace the opportunities of 2026 with fresh energy.
